How to Irreversibly Transform Money, a project by Paul Griffiths and Cesare Pietroiusti (2004)

"Beginning in June 2004, we sent out an information sheet inviting anyone to contribute to this project by sending in one or more bank-notes in a currency that is in use, the value of which seemed significant to the contributor. We researched as many ways as possible to irreversibly alter the material (paper, ink, etc.) out of which paper money is made through physical, chemical, or biological techniques.
Between October 19th and 22nd we processed all of the bank-notes that were sent to us in all possible ways, and we subsequently exhibited the results in the gallery.
At the end of the exhibition (November 20) each contributor was returned the residue of his/her bank-note(s), together with a certificate.
In all, we altered 90 bank-notes, for a total value of about 1000 Euros. Methods enacted and substances used: Hand manipulation; Chewing; Ingestion; Fragmentation; Burning; Marking with permanent ink; Hydrocloric acid 37%; Household bleach; Sulphuric acid; Sodium hypoclorite 20%; Sodium hydroxide; Phenol; Di-metil-formamide; Hair bleach; Tri-chloro-etilene; Formic acid; Aspergillus mold; Silver fish; Mice digestion."

This project was produced for the exhibition of the same title curated by Hajnalka Somogyi, Trafo Gallery House of Contemporary Arts, Budapest, October 2004.
